Seiko Quartz Sapphire SGG713 Review & Complete Guide

If you are looking for an affordable yet reliable watch, Seiko is definitely a brand worthy of consideration.

Seiko is widely appreciated for its affordable watches that still offer great build quality and reliability in relation to their price. Amongst watch enthusiasts, it is particularly the automatic watches from Seiko that are the most appealing. However, there are a few benefits of quartz watches that may make you want to consider them.

The first is of course practicality. Quartz watches are far more accurate than mechanical watches and also do not have to be wound up in order to function. They will simply continue to tick year after year and only need a battery replacement occasionally. Furthermore, quartz watches are also much more affordable to maintain and service. And lastly, quartz watches also generally tend to be more affordable than their mechanical counterparts.

With that said, if you are looking for a reliable everyday watch that simply ”works” when you put it on, and a stylish timepiece that works for any occasion, at a price that is hard to resist, the Seiko Quartz Sapphire SGG713 could be a watch for you.

The Seiko Quartz Sapphire SGG713 is priced extremely affordable at just around 100 USD. At the same time, it becomes very evident when looking at this watch in detail that it still punches well above its own weight, and certainly above many of its competitors in the same price range.

In terms of design, this is a watch that simply works for just about any occasion. It is clean, elegant, and simple, yet has a sporty appeal to it.

Without further ado, in this article, we are reviewing the Seiko Quartz Sapphire SGG713.

Seiko Quartz Sapphire SGG713 case

The SGG713 is presented with a stainless steel case with a diameter of 38.5mm including the crown and 36mm excluding the crown. With that said, it is a rather small watch that works for both men and women but is particularly popular for men with medium or small wrists. The watch has a thickness of less than 10mm (9mm to be exact) which allows it to slide under a cuff without any issues.

In terms of size, it is a discreet case that is perfect for those who enjoy wearing smaller watches or just enjoy the classic nature of a size that is more towards ”dress watch” sizing.

As revealed in its name, this watch features a sapphire crystal which is very rare for watches in this price range, and this is why Seiko proudly flaunts it on the dial and in its name. This is a really great value proposition from Seiko.

In terms of case design, most of the case is polished except for the lugs which are brushed. The brushed accents provide a nice contrast and ensure it also has a touch of sportiness to it.

What stands out about this case is its unique case design where the lugs are distinct and pronounced. This gives it a unique look that we have found some people like and others are not huge fans of. Positioned at 3 o’clock, we have a small crown which is a push-pull. The watch offers a water resistance of 100m/330 feet which means you can take it showering or even swimming for shorter periods of time.

Seiko Quartz Sapphire SGG713 dial

The watch features a beautiful and simple white dial which is semi-polished. Another great feature about this watch that enhances its impression of quality is its applied polished metal hour markers with bevels that reflect the light beautifully but most importantly remind of timepieces with price tags of much higher than 100 USD. Right next to the edge of each hour marker, Seiko has added dots of luminous mass (Lumibrite) to help with legibility in low-lit conditions.

The hands of this watch are beautiful too, with a dauphine shape and applied Lumibrite. The hands are polished and also beveled which looks great. The second hand has an arrow tip with Lumibrite applied to it.

Overall, the lume isn’t that great, however, and doesn’t glow as bright as it would have been nice to have it glow.

Positioned at 3 o’clock, we have a day and date window with a beveled metal frame around it. This is a great feature that helps make it more practical for everyday wear. The background is made in white which allows it to blend in well with the dial. The text is printed in black except for Sunday which is printed in red and Saturday which is printed in blue.

The dial has 4 lines of text including the Seiko logo, all of which are printed in black. Interestingly enough, they all have different fonts, but it works quite well still.

Seiko SGG713 movement

This watch is powered by the Seiko quartz caliber 7n43. The movement has great accuracy, as is to be expected from a quartz movement. Not much else to say.

Bracelet

The watch is presented on a three-link bracelet which is satin finished, except for two small stripes in the middle which Seiko has added to create contrast against the brushed finish.

The issue with affordable watches is that the bracelet is generally the part that is compromised with the most. The bracelet has some rattle to it and doesn’t feel 100% solid. But it is what we can expect for a watch in this price range, and it still goes well with the overall design of the watch. In addition, this watch looks great on leather straps too, shall you wish to change.

A downside to the bracelet is that it does not have a micro-adjustment for finding the perfect size.
