News! Rolex Presents the Submariner No-Date 124060
NEWS! Rolex has officially presented the much-anticipated new Submariner no-date reference 124060, to replace the predecessor reference 114060.
Remember, Rolex is about evolution, not revolution. In traditional Rolex fashion, Rolex has upgraded and refined the Submariner no-date, but the brand has stayed true to its design.
The biggest change to the Submariner no-date involves changing to the new generation caliber 3230. In addition to this, Rolex has increased the diameter of this watch to 40 to 41mm. But at the same time, the lugs have been made slimmer and not as bulky as on the predecessor. With that said, despite its increased size, it may wear more or less the same as the predecessor.
Apart from this, the Submariner 124060 will feel and look very similar to the predecessor, Both in terms of style but also design.
Rolex Submariner 124060
The update to the Rolex Submariner “no-date” 114060 (predecessor) didn’t come as a surprise. It was released in 2012 and still featured Rolex’s previous generation caliber 3130 whilst many watches in the brand’s collection had already been updated with the latest generation 31XX calibers. With that said, it was only a question of time.
Looking closer at the watch, even trained eyes may have a difficult time spotting the differences between these two watches in a whim. The visual changes are small, but they are important. But most important is what is powering the movement.
What surprised most people about the new 124060 is that it now features a 41mm case. This already splits opinions considering the fact that Rolex has never made the Submariner bigger than 40mm, which is also considered the classic size of the Submariner. On paper, this means that you may think that it wears a lot bigger than its predecessor, but it doesn’t. Whilst we don’t have the exact diameter of this watch yet, it is possible that the Submariner has only increased in size by some 0.5mm, which is also true with other Rolex watches.
But what has the biggest effect on how this watch wears is its lugs which have now been made slimmer and more refined, than the chunky and fat lugs on the 114060. With that said, the watch will wear very similar to the 114060 although, on paper, it can seem like it will be much bigger. In addition to this, Rolex also fitted this watch with a wider bracelet that is now 21mm instead of 20mm for better proportions and wearability.
Since it requires a trained eye to spot the change in the lug design, the best way to spot the new 124060 from the 114060 is by looking at the bottom of the dial at 6 o’clock. On the new Submariner, we find that the “Swiss Made” printing has the Rolex crown between the two words. On the predecessor, there is no Rolex crown printed. This symbolizes the new generation caliber and is thus a quick and easy way to distinguish them.
Apart from this, the Submariner 124060 has all of the design features we have come to love. It features a unidirectional rotating bezel with a ceramic insert, a 300-meter water-resistance, a polished ceramic dial, and large applied hour markers made in white gold, filled with Chromalight. The same goes for the hands and the iconic Mercedes hour hand. The watch is presented on a satin-brushed Oyster bracelet with Rolex’s Glidelock extension system which is an extremely helpful and useful feature.
It retains its classic look and iconic design but has been refined and improved in traditional Rolex fashion.
