As the name suggests, this watch is a Prospex. This stands for professional specifications and means that the watch is built according to the wants and needs of professionals, in this case, divers.

Furthermore, it is also a Solar watch, which means it features Seiko’s clever solar system which catches solar and ambient light and converts that into energy for the movement. The benefit of this is of course that you won’t have to replace the battery.

And lastly, the ”diver” in its name is quite self-explanatory but simply reveals that it is a dive watch.

Without further ado, in this article, we are reviewing and looking closer at the Seiko Prospex Solar Diver SNE441.

Seiko Prospex Solar Diver SNE441 case

The Seiko Prospex SNE441 is presented with a black ion-plated stainless steel case with a diameter of 43.5mm. The blacked-out look gives it an aggressive and sporty look that appears very masculine.

The case looks very similar to what you associate a dive watch with. It has crown guards that extend from the case and keep the crown well-protected. As expected, the crown is screw-down in order to ensure its water resistance. An interesting detail is that it has a yellow stripe on it.

As a nice touch that enhances the impression of finish, the sides of the case are polished and the lugs have polished bevels on the sides.

As a true dive watch should, it has a unidirectional rotating bezel with a 60-minute graduation scale. The bezel is black ion-plated and has a coin edge for better grip and easier operation. Positioned at 12 o’clock, it has a luminous pip for legibility. The first 15-minute markings on the bezel are printed in yellow which is a really nice sporty detail.

A watch needs a water resistance of at least 200m/660 feet and this is exactly what this watch has. Remember that this is a dive watch that is built according to professional specifications. So furthermore, it is ISO certified and thus suitable for recreational scuba diving.

The ion plating of the case helps make it more durable and scratch-resistant. On top of the case, the watch has a domed Hardlex Mineral crystal.

Seiko Prospex Solar Diver SNE441 dial

Most of the dial is black and has an emphasis on legibility, as a dive watch should.

Around the outer edge of the dial, the watch has an angled chapter ring on which the seconds markers are printed. The hour markers are applied and sit on top of a raised ”plate” which sits right next to the chapter ring. In turn, the dial has yet another ”level” of the black dial which sits the more recessed. This is the center of the dial, and also the part of the dial which relates to the watch’s solar technology. Whilst most people won’t notice it, the center of the dial works like a window that directs sunlight and ambient light into the movement, and the solar cells are placed there so that they can convert this into energy for the movement.

The hour markers are large and have polished metal frames around them. They also have a generous amount of Lumibrite applied to them for legibility in the dark.

The hands are large too, as expected, which works together with the hour markers to create excellent legibility. The minutes hand has an arrow-shaped tip. The hour hand is broad and has a pointy tip.

Positioned at 3 o’clock, it has a date window. Sitting on top of the crystal, it also has a cyclops that magnifies the date. The date function is convenient to have, considering that most people will wear this as an everyday watch, and the cyclops help make it more legible.

Seiko SNE441 movement

The watch is powered by the Seiko V157 Caliber Solar Quartz movement. This movement has a power reserve of 10 months when fully charged. However, if you are wearing it, the movement will naturally recharge as solar and ambient light hits the dial.

As mentioned, the benefit of the solar movement is that you won’t have to replace the battery. This is of course good for both the environment and your convenience.

Watch enthusiasts may be scared by the fact that it has a quartz movement, but the benefit of this is accuracy, practicality, and durability.
