Hamilton Intra-Matic Auto Chrono H38416711 Review & Complete Guide

Hamilton has grown in popularity in recent times. The brand has even become more respected and appreciated by watch enthusiasts because of the fact that it offers a good balance of build quality and finishing in relation to price.

In addition, the brand is now owned by the Swatch group which has a ton of know-how and expertise in Swiss watchmaking. This creates a perfect combination of classic American design ideals and Swiss watchmaking expertise.

Hamilton’s history goes back to the 1800s when it was founded in the USA, and today it deploys an excellent combination between Swiss know-how and watchmaking, with American heritage and design. Since Hamilton manufactured military field watches for the US military during the second world war, this has become an important part of its history which has come to play an important role in its timepieces in modern times.

Hamilton makes plenty of other watches as well, but in its design, we can often see clear vintage-inspired design features, including design features and styles which were common in American watchmaking back in the day.

The Hamilton Intra-Matic Auto Chrono h38416711 is one such timepiece, which has a vintage-inspired design. This watch is based on a watch that Hamilton released in 2017 – the Intra-Matic Chrono. Hamilton has used this watch as a starting point for the H38416711.

Already from first glance, this watch looks classic, vintage, and refined.

In this article, we are reviewing and looking closer at the Hamilton Intra-Matic Auto Chrono h38416711.

Hamilton Intra-Matic Auto Chrono H38416711 case

The watch is presented in a stainless steel case which has a diameter of 40mm. The case has a thickness/height of 4.6mm and a lug-to-lug measurement of 49.2mm. The watch isn’t huge but instead wears a bit smaller due to its rather thin lugs. It has a thickness of 14.7mm.

The case is extremely clean and simple. It is made to put all the focus on the dial, and it achieves this by making the bezel very thin. This allows the dial to be large. The thin bezel is polished, and equally so the lugs. What you will notice is that the whole case is polished, making it less sporty and more dressy. The lug design is simple and clean, with rectangular straight lugs going directly from the case.

If you turn the watch around, you’ll be presented with a solid engraved case back.

Something I love about this watch is that it has lovely angular lines, in particular of the lugs. Since it is a chronograph, it has classic pump pushers on each side of the crown. The watch also has a small pusher at 10 o’clock which allows you to advance the date.

Hamilton Intra-Matic Auto Chrono H38416711 dial

What stands out about this timepiece is the fact that it has a so-called ”panda” dial. Or at least close to it. This means that the sub-dial registers are made in black and the background is white. The fact that it only has two registers instead of the more common 3 gives it an extremely visually pleasing and symmetrical dial.

The background of the dial, however, is not completely white but more a cream, off-white color which adds to the vintage and retro look. For the outer ring of the dial, Hamilton has opted for a black color. On this, the Tachymeter scale printed in white. This contrast between off-white and black gives the dial a ”simple complexity” if that makes sense?

Positioned at 6 o’clock, Hamilton has placed a date window with a white background and with the date printed in black. Generally, date windows tend to split opinions, because whilst they make the watch more practical, they have a tendency to negatively affect the layout and symmetry of the dial. But in my opinion, the date window is discreet and well-integrated and doesn’t disturb the layout too much.

The watch has applied polished metal markers that reflect the light beautifully and really enhance the feeling of quality. Just outside of the outer edge of the hour marker, it has applied super luminova for improved legibility.

The two sub-dials are recessed and have a lovely circular pattern.

The Hamilton Intra-Matic Auto Chrono H38416711 is quite busy but extremely well-executed and doesn’t feel cluttered. Its dial printing is kept at a minimum with the Hamilton logo printed in black at 12 o’clock and an ”Automatic” printing beneath the center of the hands.

Speaking of the hands, they are very simple and clean. The minute and hour hands are made of metal, polished, and have applied super luminova applied to them. The chronograph hand is black for contrast.

The original ETA movement, on the other hand, has a power reserve of 42 hours, which makes it a great improvement.

As mentioned, you do not adjust the date using the crown, but instead via a push button in the case.

Hamilton Intra-Matic Auto Chrono H38416711 strap

The H38416711 is presented on a black leather strap that tapers from 20mm. This strap certainly adds elegance to the watch and makes it look more formal and classy. The strap is simple but really goes well together with the design of the watch. With that said, this watch also looks great on a bunch of other straps too.
