Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic h70455133 Review & Complete Guide

Hamilton was originally founded in 1892 in the United States. but eventually moved its operations to Switzerland in 1962. The brand was trusted to manufacture watches for the US military during world war II, and this meant an enormous number of watches, thus establishing themselves as experts and leaders in military field watches. This heritage and history is something that is still present in the brand.

One way this can be seen is by looking at the brand’s collection of watches. The most popular model range from Hamilton is the Khaki Field collection, which seeks a lot of inspiration from Hamilton’s history and past, meaning these watches are a combination of vintage-inspired timepieces with modern build quality and durability. The Khaki Field collection includes a wide array of timepieces that all follow these themes, but at the same time are executed in different sizes and styles.

One of the models in this large collection of watches is the Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic h70455133.

The Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic h70455133 is very evidently an everyday timepiece that has a combination of sportiness, ruggedness, and military-inspired design.

The watch is slightly smaller than many of Hamilton’s other field watches, however, this also works as an entry-level timepiece to this collection for people who generally have smaller wrists and need smaller watches.

It becomes evident that this watch offers great value for money when you look at the h70455133 in detail, so that is exactly what we will be doing in this article. In this article, we will review and look closer at the Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic H70455133.

Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic h70455133 case

As mentioned, this is a watch for people with small wrists or for those who have a preference for smaller watches.

The watch has a stainless steel case with a diameter of 38mm. Its thickness measures 10mm. That said, the watch wears quite small.

In proportion to the case, the crown is actually quite big. This is a classic design feature of military watches originally, so it makes sense that Hamilton chose to continue on that theme. The benefit, apart from the looks, is that the large crown allows for a good grip and easy operation. A downside of the crown is that it can dig into the wrist.

Hamilton has done a great job with finishing the watch. The top of the lugs are satin-brushed finished and equally so are the sides of the case. The only polished part of this watch is its bezel. This works as a nice contrast, but at the same time, its mostly satin-finished case means that it looks very sporty and tool-like.

Having said that, the h70455133 is a perfect everyday watch that is also extremely versatile. It looks sporty, but thanks to its black dial, small size, and polished bezel, it also works for more formal occasions.

If you turn the case around, you’ll be able to see the screw-down see-through case back. This is a nice little detail of this watch that allows you to see the mechanical automatic piece of craftsmanship beating inside.

If you enjoy the design and look of the Khaki Field Automatic h70455133 but have too large wrists to wear it, you’ll be happy to hear that Hamilton also has a larger version of this watch with a diameter of 42mm.

Sitting on top of the case, Hamilton has used a sapphire crystal. This is great news since far from every watch in this price range use sapphire crystal. In fact, mineral glass is often used instead. The sapphire crystal is slightly domed which helps with the vintage look.

The bezel of the case is fixed and polished and is slightly angled. It is quite thin in order to put all focus on the dial. After all, a military watch needs great legibility. And because of the relatively thin bezel, it allows the watch to have a wide dial. This puts most of the focus on the dial, and actually, that is the whole point of a military field watch – legibility.

The watch weighs in at 119 grams with its bracelet which is quite decent for a tool watch. Most people enjoy having some reassuring heft and weight on the wrist when wearing a sports watch in order to get a sense of robustness and durability, and that is exactly what the h70455133 offers.

The Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic h70455133 offers a water resistance of 10 bar or 100m. This is enough for swimming and scuba diving but not deep diving. For a field watch, the water resistance is ok and likely enough since you will probably not go diving with this anyways. One reason this watch doesn’t have better water resistance is due to the fact that it doesn’t have a screw-down crown.

Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic H70455133

Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic h70455133 dial

The watch is presented with a lovely black dial with a slightly matte/sunburst finish to it which helps make it more interesting.

In addition to that, the dia is divided into three ”sections” of raised and recessed parts, with the most striking being the circular pattern towards the outer of the dial which reflects the light beautifully.

Apart from the difference between recessed/raised, the dial is also divided into sections for practical purposes. The middle hour ring displays 12 hours. From 13 to 24 hours, which works as military time in the afternoon. It also has hours from 1 to 12 printed with white Arabic numerals.

As a field watch should, the markers and numerals are printed in white instead of applied. This adds to the vintage style and also helps with legibility. Around the outer edge of the dial, the split seconds are printed in white. On each 5-minute marking, it has dots of luminescence to help with legibility even in low-lit conditions.

Positioned at 3 o’clock we have a date window discreetly integrated with a white background and black printing. The date function is a feature that makes this watch even more practical.

With all of the Arabic numerals, this watch is busy, but at the same time, it doesn’t feel cluttered. There’s really a fine balance here, but Hamilton has succeeded very well. Note that the Arabic numerals not only are painted but also have luminescence applied to them, which of course is a really practical feature.

The dial printing you’ll find on this watch is the “Hamilton” logo at 12 o’clock and ”KHAKI AUTOMATIC” below the center of the hands.

The hands of this watch are designed according to traditional military watch design. This means very long tips. The minute and hour hand have generous amounts of super luminova applied to them and have a polished metal frame. The hands are nicely finished and also reflect the light beautifully to create an impression of being well-finished.

The dial of the watch is completely monochrome, but Hamilton decided to add one touch of color which comes in the form of the seconds hand. The seconds hand is made of steel but it has an arrow-shaped tip that has been colored red which adds to the sporty look.

One thing you cannot complain about when it comes to this watch is its legibility.

Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic h70455133 movement

The Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic h70455133 is equipped with the automatic mechanical Hamilton caliber H-10. This movement is based on the ETA caliber C07.111. To the untrained, the caliber H-10 gives the impression that it is a completely new, in-house movement, but that is not the case. Well, to some extent, you could call it an in-house movement since the Swatch Group owns Hamilton but also ETA.

The changes made to the ETA movement are small and mainly involve changes to the aesthetics including a new rotor with a cutout Hamilton logo. The movement has hacking seconds and a manual winding function.

It beats with a frequency of 21600 BPH (6 beats per second) and offers a power reserve of a whopping 80 hours which is actually rather impressive for a watch in this price range. It is equipped with 25 jewels and powered by a rotor.

The movement doesn’t really have any decorations apart from the rotor but keeps in mind that this movement is not meant to be the most beautiful. Instead, it is meant to be sporty, durable, and robust. This is, after all, what we expect a military field watch to be.

Since this movement is from ETA, you can expect it to be reliable, durable, and have a great performance.

Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic h70455133 bracelet

The watch is presented on a stainless steel bracelet with a satin finish. A general downside with many affordable watches is that they tend to compromise on the bracelet build quality, but that is actually not the case for the h70455133. Instead, the bracelet of this watch is actually really nice.

The bracelet is equipped with a deployment clasp with push buttons. The clasp feels sturdy and secure on the wrist like it will never let you down. The bracelet looks great with the case design and feels robust and solid. Overall, it gives the impression of being really well-made.

The bracelet is nice, but the Khaki Field Automatic h70455133 will also look great on a leather strap.

  1. I have this watch and I think it’s a wonderful timekeeping piece. I was looking for my first (and only?) mechanical watch (after my son was born) and this one ticked all the boxes for me. Automatic, Swiss, field/military style (the style I like most, along with Fliegers) and yet elegant enough to be a daily wearer. These watches are known to be very accurate as well, and I can attest to that (ranging from 0.5 to 2 s/d).
The ‘review’ sums up the nice points greatly, but to be frank it’s a rather poor review in the strict sense of the word. It only speaks of how awesome it is and it hence comes off as a Hamilton commercial. As much as I love this piece, there have to be some gripes. One gripe you read all over the internet is that the crystal does not have anti-reflective (AR) coating. Once you notice it you cannot unnotice it (not the end of the world , I know). I took care of this by having the crystal replaced with an original Hamilton crystal with AR applied to the underside. It is now perfect for me. People have also complained about the lume, but I personally think it’s perfectly adequate. This is nitpicking anyway, it’s a great watch!

    1. Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts! We will certainly keep it in consideration for future posts.

      Kind regards,

  2. I have to agree with the above comment. I have this watch, which I bought from a friend when he was downsizing his collection. He had already done exactly the same as the previous commenter and replaced the Crystal with an AR coated one. I wondered why it would have been necessary initially, since I also have a similarly styled watch without AR and it has never been an issue. Then I saw a Hamilton without it and suddenly I realised that my other watch has a flat crystal as opposed to the slightly domed Hamilton and I suspect this may be why reflection may be a problem. My Gnomon Steinhart has a domed crystal with AR and it’s perfect in most situations, so I wonder why, for the sake of a small extra cost, Hamilton don’t fit them as original. It’s a great watch though, accurate and tough. I have mine on a decent quality NATO strap because I think it suits the look of the watch better and I don’t worry about scratching the bracelet when I’m using it as a field watch. Top marks generally.

    1. Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts and congratulations on a beautiful timepiece!

      Kind regards,
      Millenary Watches
