Case
The watch is presented with a 40.5 mm stainless steel case with a thickness of 12.1mm. The watch has a classic round shape and is also beautifully finished. It has a thin polished bezel which puts all the focus on the dial. It is then complemented by relatively short and elegant curved lugs which are brushed on top and polished beveling on the inside which creates a seamless and seamless look. This is in turn contrasted by polished sides. This type of case finishing really enhances the watch’s appearance and makes it appear much more exclusive and luxurious than what its price suggests.
At 3 o’clock it has a relatively large crown that blends into its design well and is easy to operate. On top of the case, it has an anti-reflective coated sapphire crystal.
The crown is not screwed down which naturally increases the risk of accidentally pulling it out whilst underwater. Whilst this is a potential risk, it is, at the same time, not a dive watch, so depending on how you wear it, you may or may not have to think about the crown.
The water resistance of this watch is 100m/330 feet which means it is suitable for swimming, but not diving. This should be enough considering the type of watch and the occasions you’ll be wearing it.
The watch is presented on a stainless steel bracelet with brushed links and two ”stripes” of smaller, polished links. In terms of style, it goes very well together with the watch thanks to its balance between sportiness and elegance. Apart from looks, the bracelet is quite well executed in terms of quality. But it’s worth keeping in mind that this is, relatively speaking, an affordable watch, and therefore, it does have some room for improvement in terms of its robustness. But the bracelet is not terrible in any way and overall gives a qualitative impression.
If you don’t like the bracelet or simply want to give it a different style, you can remove the bracelet and change to a different strap with the use of a spring bar tool.
Dial
The dial is the highlight of this watch and has amazing attention to detail. Seiko has really done a great job here by incorporating lots of details that enhance its appearance but in a subtle and non-intrusive way.
First of all, the watch has a black dial with a beautiful, discreet pattern that reflects the light beautifully and makes it very vibrant. At 3 o’clock, it has a date window and a metal frame around it.
The watch has elegant dauphine hands made in polished metal (with the minute and hour hand-painted white for better legibility) which blend in nicely with the elegance of this timepiece. To go with the classic theme, Seiko has also added relatively large Breguet-style Arabic numerals on the dial. The Seiko logo at the top is applied from a cutout piece of metal.
With this said, it is evident that Seiko has paid great attention to every single detail of this watch. The dial remains simple in appearance, but once you look closer, you realize that it’s not so simple after all. It’s a very interesting and successful balance that Seiko has been able to pull off.
Movement
Powering the watch is the in-house automatic Seiko caliber 6R15. This is a well-performing movement that has proven to be a robust and durable workhorse that can continue to tick for years. The watch has a hacking and a self-winding function. The movement beats with a frequency of 6 times per second. It has a power reserve of 50 hours. The movement is also constructed to be anti-magnetic.
If you turn the watch around, you’ll also notice that it is equipped with a see-through case back. The fact that you have a nice automatic movement and a see-through case back is something that watch enthusiasts will appreciate. The see-through case back works as a reminder of the mechanical craftsmanship that is powering the watch.
