Onyx Dial Rolex Watches – List of Rolex Watches with Onyx Stone Dial

Rolex is a master at dial-making. The dial is one of the most important, if not the most important, visual aspect of a watch. It is the face of each timepiece and so it is important that it makes a good visual impression.

Whilst Rolex is a very traditional and orthodox company, Rolex has created countless different dial designs throughout the years, some bolder than others. Rolex has made dials in an endless selection of colors, and whilst most of their dials are traditional black or silver, these colorful or special dials stand out and are a fun contrast for anyone who is looking for something different.

But Rolex hasn’t only experimented with different dial colors. They have also experimented with a large selection of materials throughout the years. And there’s just something truly unique and special with a watch that has a dial made of a material that isn’t a regular sheet of metal. Rolex has made wood dials, cork dials, coral dials, and much more.

Moreover, Rolex has experimented a lot with different stone types for its dials which is something that gives each watch a unique and striking appearance. To name a few, you can find Rolex watches with dials made in malachite stone, rubellite stone, sodalite stone, chrysoprase, and of course, onyx, which is what we are going to focus on in this article.

Onyx gemstone is a “type of Chalcedony which has parallel banded layers”. Onyx stones can be found in a large selection of colors, from blue, green, red, red-orange, orange, and of course black.

Rolex has used Onyx gemstone for the dials of some of its watches for many decades but stopped with the discontinuation of the 116233 in 2018. That is of course not to say that the Onyx will never come back into the Rolex collection, but only time will tell.

What’s so special about the Rolex Onyx dial is, apart from the fact that it is made from a real gemstone, is that the stone has an extremely black color. The onyx stone dial almost absorbs the light and creates an almost pitch-black color and distinct appearance. With the onyx dials, Rolex has also decided to remove the indices and seconds markers on the dial to create a clean, elegant, and refined look.

Rolex has only made the Onyx dials available for a select number of models throughout the years, and the production of this dial has remained very low. This makes the onyx dial a rare and sought-after feature of any Rolex watch. And in recent years, onyx dials have become extremely sought-after by collectors due to their clean and unique appearance.

Below, we have compiled an extensive list of onyx dial watches with all Rolex watches that have ever been made with an Onyx dial.
