NEWS! Rolex Releases GMT-Master II 126710LN Black!

Every year, Rolex presents its new models for the year and discontinues a few of them. On March 30th, 2022, Rolex officially presented the new models for the year. Amongst many new and interesting watches is a new GMT-Master II. This time with a GMT-Master II with a black and red bezel!

Over the last couple of years, Rolex has worked to refresh and update its GMT-Master II collection. Partially because the model needed a slight face-lift, but most importantly because the GMT-Master II needed to be upgraded from the caliber 3185 to the new generation caliber 3285.

Starting in 2018, they introduced the 126710BLRO, known as the “Pepsi” which quickly became one of the hottest watches in the Rolex collection. In the next year, Rolex released a black and blue variant, known as “Batman” or “Batgirl” with reference 126710BLNR. In 2021, Rolex introduced both models on the Oyster bracelet, making them available either with Oyster or Jubilee.

Now, the change to this GMT-Master II for 2022 years release is not huge, just like the introduction of the Oyster bracelets to the models the year before. Everything about this watch is identical to both the already existing 126710BLRO and the 126710BLNR. But in the world of Rolex and amongst Rolex enthusiasts, even the smallest detail, is something big.

But whilst the upgrade is not big, it’s an important watch from a historical standpoint. Why?

When the predecessor to the 126710BLNR was in production, Rolex made it in two variations. The 116710LN and the 116710BLNR. In other words, with black or black and blue bezel. So when Rolex released the 126710BLNR in 2019, it was already a familiar watch due to it being almost visually identical to the 116710BLNR apart from the Jubilee bracelet and a few visual tweaks.

But when Rolex released the 126710BLRO, the excitement was considerably higher. Whilst the watch was visually very different to the processor, it had one key difference – the red and blue bezel. The “Pepsi” bezel had not been in production since it was discontinued in 2007and was, therefore, a welcomed return for this iconic GMT bezel colorway. And it was certainly a nod to the past.

For 2022, the expectation was that Rolex would receive either an all-black bezel GMT-Master or a “Coke” GMT-Master with a black and red bezel. None of this happened, as Rolex’s releases proved.

Instead, Rolex shocked the market by releasing something that people never would have expected. They released – for the first time ever – a left-handed GMT-Master II, reference 126720VTNR with a green and black bezel.

Presenting the new GMT-Master II 126710

The new GMT-Master II is, at its core, very similar to all of the other GMT-Master IIs that we have come to love. But it has one key visual difference – namely that it is a left-handed watch, meaning that the crown and crown guards are positioned on the left side of the case instead of the right. The 126720VTNR is the first GMT-Master II ever to have this layout which makes it important from a historical standpoint.

Furthermore, the 126720VTNR is also the first watch to feature a bezel with a green and black configuration.

In terms of making the watch, the creation of a left-handed watch is actually not more complicated than making a regular stainless steel GMT-Master II. To create this LHD configuration, Rolex has simply rotated the case, the, rotated the movement and moved the date window of the dial to the 9′ o’clock position instead of 3. And to top it off, paired it with a new green and black bezel. In other words, all the parts used for the GMT-Maser II are the same as on the other steel GMT-Master IIs in production except for the green GMT hand and the bezel insert.

“Made from Oystersteel and fitted with an Oyster bracelet, this watch features a two-colour monobloc Cerachrom bezel insert in green and black ceramic – a colour pairing never before seen on this model.”

Like the 126710BLRO and 126710BLNR, The 126720VTNR has the same 40mm stainless steel Oyster case and is available with either a Jubilee or Oyster bracelet. Like all GMT-Master IIs, it is powered by the latest Generation GMT caliber 3285.
