Casio G-Shock GD-400 Review & Complete Guide

The G-Shock collection doesn’t need any further introduction. But what may need further introduction are all the different models that are part of the G-Shock collection. As the popularity of the G-Shock range has grown, so has the number of timepieces that Casio offers within it.

Today, there are tons of different versions and models under the G-Shock name with different styling and functions in order to cater to everyone’s needs, wants, and preferences.

The Casio G-Shock GD-400 is one of them, and this is a watch that stays true to the core concept of the G-Shock, meaning it is tough, durable, robust, and made with the concept of function before form. This is a watch that has numerous useful features, but in addition to this, it has a design that gives an impression of ”I can handle anything”. And this watch really can.

In this article, we are reviewing and looking closer at the Casio G-Shock GD-400.

But before we do, it’s worth noting that this watch is available in several different designs, where the difference is the colors they incorporate. With that said, if you like its overall design, you can then opt for the color that speaks the most to you.

If you want a tough, affordable, and durable companion that can handle all kinds of harsh conditions you may subject it to when out in the field, or just a watch that looks like it, for everyday use, this is definitely a watch worth considering. This is considered a ”standard” G-Shock, meaning it does not include a ton of different functions apart from the basic ones that you can expect, but it gets the job done.

”Classic designs are freshened up with a choice of five different color variations.”

Case

Starting off with the case, the GD-400 is presented with the signature G-Shock black resin case with a distinct bezel design. The case

What is particularly unique about this watch is that it has two stainless steel metal bars that work to protect the face. They prevent accidental knocks from items and thus keep them from damaging the screen. In addition, they also work as shock absorbers.

On top of the case sits a mineral crystal, which is to be expected from a G-Shock in this price range. The watch offers a water resistance of 200m/660 feet, meaning you can take it swimming or diving and it won’t break a sweat.

The case has a diameter of 49.7mm and a length of 55mm. The thickness measures 16.6mm. This certainly isn’t the largest G-Shock out there, but like most of them, it does have a wrist presence which is appreciated amongst G-Shock fans and those who enjoy a timepiece that is a bit bulky. At the same time, with a weight of only 78 grams, it is very light, so it will still be relatively discreet on the wrist.

In traditional G-Shock fashion, it has push buttons positioned on the sides of the case which sit protected inside ”protectors” These are also designed as ”bumpers” to keep it protected from shocks and bangs.

Remember, this is one tough watch.

The watch is presented on a resin band, like many others, but this is not your ordinary integrated resin G-Shock strap. This one has more of a rubbery feel to it which feels more durable. The strap is attached to the case with ”bars” that attach to the protruding short lugs. This makes for a sporty and robust look.

Dial/screen

Being a 100% digital watch, it is presented with a digital display. The display is negative, meaning the information displayed on the screen is light as opposed to dark, which is the most common type of display. One downside of this watch is that the legibility isn’t the best, but the good news is that it is equipped with a super illuminator which allows you to light up the dial so you can read the time regardless of the surrounding light.

The screen is divided into different sections that present different information.

Movement/functions

Looking at the functions, this watch has a lot of them, however, it doesn’t have a bunch of special features like some of the most advanced, such as Barometer or tide graph.

Of course, regular timekeeping is presented as the largest on the main screen. In addition to this, it has a world time with 31 time zones, a 1/110th second stopwatch, daily alarms with a flash alert, and a full auto-calendar. And lastly, the 12/24 hour format

For everyday wear, and for those who just want a trusted companion, this watch should be more than enough. But if you want a more advanced G-Shock, there are plenty of others to choose from on the market.

Conclusion

All in all, the Casio G-Shock GD-400 is a great versatile and sporty watch that stays true to the ethos of the G-Shock range. It is sporty, and tough, and will hold up against virtually any harsh conditions you subject it to.

The watch is one of the more affordable tough G-Shocks in the brand’s collection, but at an affordable price, and being a basic timepiece, it’s what we can expect. If you don’t need all of the other features, then this should do the job just fine. The steel bars which are integrated into this watch make it one step more robust and durable.

It has a classic design that G-Shock fans will appreciate which isn’t too aggressive to not work for everyday wear. The benefit of the negative display is that it makes for a cooler, more stealthy look, but it does affect the legibility somewhat, but this is compensated by the backlight.

Another bonus about this model is that it comes in different colors so you can choose the one that appeals to you the most.

All in all, at this price point, this watch is a great value proposition since you don’t have to be too worried about damaging or breaking it. And in addition, the chances that you will actually break it are quite low.

Last but not least, Casio has also done a few Casio G-Shock GD-400 variants with a non-negative dial.

  1. I purchased two of these in 2016, one as a main work watch and one as a back up. My job is outdoors and the watch is perfect. Super tough. I’ve never needed to wear the back up as the main has never missed a beat and is still going strong on the original battery. In fact, it’s been worn for so long and so often that all the black paint has worn off the metal protector bars.

The only issue – despite the advertising blurb to the contrary – is lack of water resistance. First time I wore it in the shower the glass fogged-up immediately and took two days to clear up.

Other than that it’s been excellent. If you want a super tough cool-looking watch that just tells time, look no further

    1. Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts and experience! Very interesting.

      Kind regards,
