There is something special about dive watches. They have acquired an almost legendary status in the world and have a coolness factor to them that makes them extremely popular. Whilst dive watches were originally developed as crucial tools for professional divers, the fact is that the vast majority of dive watch owners never go diving with them. This just goes to show the great popularity and versatility of dive watches. They do not only work with wetsuits, but they also work great for everyday wear and everything in between.
If you’re looking for a high-quality, robust, and durable dive watch with automatic movement, the Orient Kanno may be the watch for you. Before we dig in, it’s worth knowing that the Kanno is available in a number of different versions. The main difference between them is their bezel color, and the strap option – either a steel bracelet or silicon strap. With that said, if you like the overall style of this model, you should be able to find one that suits your taste.
Orient Kanno Case
Starting off, the watch is presented with a stainless steel case with a diameter of 44mm. The thickness measures 12.9mm and the lug-to-lug 50mm. With that said, it is a relatively large watch, most suitable for men with medium to large wrists, or for those who enjoy wearing large watches.
The crown is positioned at 3 o’clock and is made slightly larger than those used on most of Orient’s other dive watches. The crown is protected by crown guards. Of course, being a dive watch, the crown is a screw-down, to ensure its water resistance.
For its price, the case has a really nice finish to it as well. The top of the case has a brushed satin finish and the sides are polished. As a dive watch should, it is of course equipped with a unidirectional rotating bezel with an aluminum insert and a 60-minute graduation scale. One downside is that the bezel does not have a luminous pip at 12 o’clock, but it is not the end of the world. The bezel has sharp teeth around them which both adds to the watch’s sporty appearance, but also improves grip and makes it easier to operate, in particular with gloves.
The bezel has 120 clicks and operates quite nicely and feels smooth. The movement doesn’t really feel cheap, which some of the affordable watches can feel.
On top of the case, Orient has opted for a mineral crystal. A sapphire crystal would be nice, but it is not something that we really expect for watches in this price range. The crystal sits slightly recessed below the bezel which helps keep it protected and prevents chips and damage to the crystal.
A dive watch also needs good water resistance, and the Kanno is resistant to 200m/660 feet, meaning you can go swimming and diving with it without having to worry.
Overall, the case has a classic dive watch design. It looks sporty and robust, yet timeless.
The watch is presented on either a silicone strap or a steel bracelet, depending on which version you opt for. The case has a lug width of 22mm and the bracelet tapers to 20mm which is a nice detail that improves comfort. It also has a fold-over push-button release clasp. Another nice detail about the bracelet is that it has 4 micro-adjust holes which makes it easier to find a perfect fit.
Orient Kanno Dial
The dial of the Orient Kanno is exactly what we expect a dive watch dial to be. It puts emphasis on legibility and simplicity.
Most of the Kanno versions are presented with a black dial, whilst it is also available in colors like blue and white.
The watch has large applied hour markers with metal frames around them. The markers are filled with luminescent material which helps improve legibility in darkness and low-lit conditions. The hands are broad and sword-shaped, and these too have luminescent material on them.
Positioned at 3 o’clock, the watch has a day and date window which perhaps isn’t crucial when diving 100 meters below the surface, but it is practical for everyday wear, which is, after all, what most people will wear it for. The day and date window doesn’t really have a frame, but only lines above and below them to make them blend into the dial better and more discreetly.
Apart from that, the dial is clean, simple, and looks very well-balanced.
Orient Kanno Movement
Inside the watch beats the in-house Orient caliber F6922 which is an automatic movement with manual winding and hacking-seconds function.
The movement is one of the reasons why Orient’s watches are so popular since they are known to be robust and durable. In addition, there are not very many brands out there that offer in-house automatic movements at this price point.
The automatic movement in this watch is the same movement that you’ll find in far more expensive Orient watches, making it a great value. The power reserve of this movement is 40 hours.
