The Presage SRPB41j1, also known as Cocktail time, offers the build quality and finish that we have come to expect from Seiko. Offered at a price of about 400 USD, this is undoubtedly one of the best alternatives for a classy dress watch in this price range. And it is when you inspect this watch and see the finish and quality up close that you understand the immense value this timepiece offers.

To help you, that is exactly what we are going to do in this article. In this article, we are reviewing and looking closer at the Seiko Presage SRPB41j1.

Seiko Presage SRPB41j1 case

The SRPB41j1 has a simple and elegant case design. The case has a diameter of 40mm and a thickness of 11.8 mm. Between the lugs, it measures 20 mm, with a lug-to-lug measurement of 47.5 mm. The total weight of this watch is about 70 grams.

With that said, the watch is a slimmed and ”Standard-sized” watch. It will sit slimmed on the wrist and be able to slip under cuffs and fit most men’s wrists.

Sitting on top of the case, we have a domed Hardlex crystal. Considering this is a dress watch, the fact that it doesn’t have a sapphire crystal seems ok. After all, you’re not meant to subject it to harsh conditions.

The watch has a thin bezel frame with a classic lug design. The thin bezel allows for a large dial that takes up most of the space at the front. This is great news seeing the stunning dial this watch is equipped with (more on this further on). The lugs are polished and equally so the bezel. Bear in mind this is a dress watch, so polished elements are what we need to enhance its elegant look. The sides of the case are polished as well. Having brushed parts is a nice contrasting detail that generally tends to enhance the impression of a well-finished timepiece, but due to the nature of this watch, it works well.

Positioned at 3 o’clock, we have the crown. The crown has an almost cupcake shape with an etched ”S” on the top. Thanks to the shape of the crown, it is easy to get a good grip and operate it properly. Some people complain about the size of the crown, but having a relatively large crown makes it easy to grip and operate it. The crown is a push-down.

The watch offers a water resistance of 5 bar or 5 ATM or 50 meters. This means it can handle splashes from water but should not be submerged. Its relatively low water resistance is not a huge issue seeing that this is a dress watch and not meant to be worn when swimming or diving, anyways.

It is especially the dial of this watch that is the star of the show. The dial is clean and refined with only four lines of text, but in design, it is really something else.

The watch has a stunning blue dial with an eye-catching pattern which results in the light being beautifully reflected. Especially when the sunlight hit it. The dial is dark blue but has a fumé/fading design which means the blue is brighter in the center of the dial and then fades to a dark blue toward the edges. On the outer edges, the dial has printed seconds markers in white.

Due to the deep pattern of this watch that starts from the center of the dial and stretches out to the edges, the light really dances and makes it incredible to look at. If nothing else, this watch is worth buying only for the sake of the dial.

Positioned at 3 o’clock, we have a date window with a metal frame around it.

The date is printed white on top of a black date wheel. I am surprised that Seiko is fine with the black background on the date wheel. This creates an additional color to the dial which makes it slightly distracting from the general blue of the dial. The date wheel has a black background with white printing on top which allows it to blend in nicely on the dial. The catch, however, is that the dial is blue so it does not blend in 100%, but the alternative would have been either blue background or a fading blue background, of which the latter would probably look a bit strange. It’s still good that Seiko choice not to use a white background.

To enhance its refined look, the dial has applied metal hour markers made in a tear-drop design. The hour markers are polished which means they reflect the light beautifully.

The watch has three clean, no-nonsense hands that blend in nicely with the design. These are also polished metal and are angled to reflect the light beautifully.

Movement

Turning the watch around reveals a see-through case back. The case back has a Hardlex crystal through which you can see the automatic movement beating inside. This watch is equipped with the Seiko in-house 4R35 caliber.

This is certainly not the most beautiful or well-finished movement, but it is known to be a reliable workhorse that continues to tick year after year. But to make the look of this movement more elegant, Seiko has fitted it with a new rotor which has been gold plated. This was a wise move from Seiko since otherwise, the movement would look too industrialized and tool-like, which of course doesn’t go very well with the overall design of the watch.

The movement has 23 jewels and beats with a frequency of 21,600 BPH/ 3 Hertz. The movement offers a power reserve of 41 hours and has an accuracy of -35 seconds to +45 seconds per day. Two functions that this movement has, which cannot be found in more affordable Automatic Seiko watches, are hacking seconds and a manual-winding feature. These are both two welcomed functions that are nice to have in an automatic watch.

Furthermore, the movie has a resistance of magnetism of up to 4,800 A/m.

Bracelet

The SRPB41j1 is fitted on a classy stainless steel bracelet with a butterfly clasp that features a push-button release. The bracelet is very classy and elegant in design, which of course goes well with the ethos of this timepiece. It is made up of small brushed and polished bits for links. The links are solid, which allows for a more robust and solid feel, but the end links are hollow, which is a downside that leads to some rattle. For the price, the bracelet is ok, seeing this is generally the part that is compromised with the most when it comes to affordable watches. It’s comfortable to wear, looks good, and gives an overall well-finished impression.

The middle links of the bracelet have been highly polished.

The butterfly clasps ensure a seamless bracelet design where the clasp is hidden. This is appropriate for a dress watch as it allows for a clear, more refined look.

Thanks to the 20mm lug width, which is standard in the industry, there is a whole array of straps to choose from. If you want to dress it up a bit more, it looks exceptionally well on a leather strap. Black always makes for a timeless look.
