Vintage Tudor Advertisements
In its early years, up until its relaunch in 2009, Tudor has stood in the shade of Rolex. People have referred to Tudor as the ”Poor man’s Rolex”, and the brand has struggled to differentiate itself from its bigger brother and build its own identity.
Tudor and Rolex share a close early history, and this has obviously affected the way the Tudor brand has evolved and the direction it has taken. The idea of Tudor by Hans Wilsdorf was to make a watch company that offered the same reliability and quality as a Rolex, but equip them with off-the-shelf movements in order to make them more affordable.
Because of this, Tudor watches were made with Rolex parts, making them look very similar to Rolex watches.
But whilst the design of your product is crucial for building an image and brand, so is advertising. The Tudor brand has always struggled with building its own image, and you can say that it really didn’t succeed up until the brand was relaunched and Tudor started releasing its very own watch designs, models, and in-house calibers.
In this article, we are going to take a trip down memory lane and look at vintage Tudor advertisements. Looking at these vintage Tudor ads will give us an insight into how Tudor tried to present itself through its ads back in the days, and what image the brand strived to establish.
Looking at these vintage Tudor ads, you will, not surprisingly, notice similarities with Rolex’s ads at the time. Yet at the same time, they are different enough to understand that the people working with Tudor were looking to differentiate the brand from Rolex.
It’s also clear by looking at these ads that Tudor tried to present its watches as durable, reliable, and robust. This was what Tudor wanted to be known for, and you can actually say that it is exactly what the Tudor brand is known for today. So in that sense, Tudor’s continued work to establish this image has been successful.
