Top 15 Best affordable Moon Phase Watches [Guide & List]
Watches are available with countless different functions and features. Originally, they only displayed the time, but as the art of watchmaking evolved, watchmakers have been able to develop new innovations to incorporate into watches.
This includes functions such as chronograph, date function, day function, split time, world timer, and of course moon phase function.
These different functions appeal to watch enthusiasts due to their technical complexity and tend to add to the appeal of watches. In addition, they also tend to give watches a distinct look which many find attractive.
The moon phase function is one that is particularly popular amongst watch enthusiasts. It looks great and adds attention to detail, thus enhancing the watch’s overall appeal.
Like with all types of watches, moon phase watches are available in countless designs and price ranges. Ultra-premium brands such as Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and Vacheron Constantin have watches with moon phase functions, but the good news is that you can also get affordable moon phase watches for a fraction of the cost.
Whilst we could easily make a list of ultra-luxury high-end watches with moon phase, it tends to be a bit more difficult to find great moon phase watches at affordable prices, since this is a function that has, for long primarily been presented in more expensive timepieces.
What is a moon phase function in a watch?
The name obviously gives it away, but a watch with a moon phase function is a watch that shows the current status of the moon cycle, whether it is a full moon, half-moon, or anything in between. With that said, when the watch and function are set properly, the moon phase shows the cycle of the moon just as you see the real moon when looking at the sky.
Obviously, most people do not have any need to actually know the current status of the moon. The popularity actually lies in the appearance it gives the watch, but also the complex craftsmanship that is required for developing them and integrating them into the watch.
The full moon cycle takes 29 and a half days, and this is what a moon phase watch presents.
Below, we have listed some of the most popular affordable moon phase watches. ”Affordable” is always a relative term, but most watches only cost a few hundred dollars, whilst we have also included a few more high-end watches that cost a few thousand. Without further ado, let’s dig in.

How accurate are moon phase watches?
In terms of timekeeping, moon phase watches are just as accurate as a watch that doesn’t have this function. But in regards to the actual moon phase function, it depends on the watch, if it is mechanical or quartz, and the quality of the moon phase.
In general, the moon phase function is accurate for a few years before it needs to be manually adjusted. But some watches are more advanced and high-end which gives better accuracy.
That is the simple answer. But the more technical answer is the following:
A moon phase function (with a mechanical movement) often works via a moon disc which has a total of 59 teeth that advances one notch every 24 hours. This is meant to reflect one full rotation of the lunar cycle, but it is not 100% on point.
The fact of the matter is that the lunar cycle lasts 29 days, 12 hours, and 44 minutes. As you can see, this is not completely accurate, specifically off by 0.3 days per month. With that said, the moon phase cycle will be off by one whole day every two years, seven and a half months. Some manufacturers have developed more advanced mechanisms to allow for better accuracy
When it comes to digital moon phase watches, it’s obviously a lot different, and so the accuracy is essentially perfect.
Why buy a moon phase watch?
There are several good reasons why you may want to buy a moon phase watch. The most common are:
They look good
There’s something beautiful and intriguing about having a moon phase indicator on the dial of a watch. It’s a nice detail that looks really nice and gives the watch added appeal. The details of the moon phase and the way it changes depending on the position of the moon allow for a more interesting timepiece. The moon phase function is often associated with expensive luxury watches, and that is to a large extent true. But with that said, it means that they add a premium look to your affordable timepiece.
You actually use the function
Another, perhaps more obvious reason to have a moon phase watch is that you truly need the function. Let’s be honest, most people who wear a moon phase watch rarely, if ever, use the moon phase function. But for some people, knowing the phase of the moon is important and valuable information, and therefore, having a watch that can present this information can be really convenient.
For the added complication
Whilst there are, as you have seen, a few affordable moon phase watches, the function is particularly common in luxury timepieces. The reason for this is that luxury watches often emphasize craftsmanship, watchmaking, and complications. And watch enthusiasts appreciate difficult complications in watches – in particular, if they are mechanical. With that said, the moon phase function adds appeal to watches and makes them more interesting and appealing to watch enthusiasts due to the increased complexity and required craftsmanship.
How to read a moon phase watch
Reading a moon phase watch is very simple. The moon rotates on a disc, and the way the moon is displayed is meant to portray the current status of the moon as you see it when you look up in the sky.
Phases of the moon watch
The moon goes through several different phases as it orbits, or more correctly, depending on the position of the sun and how it shines on the moon. The moon has four primary phases which include a waxing crescent, waxing gibbous, waning gibbous, and waning crescent.
The Orient “Sun and Moon” watches are NOT moonphase watches as you indicated, but simply show daytime and night time conditions on the dial. It’s little more than an AM/PM indicator.
True Moonphase watches show the “phase” of the moon as you mentioned in your article. Moonphase complications are much more difficult to produce than simply a dial that rotates every 24 hours.
This is most likely why the Orient automatics are even less expensive than even most of their quartz competitors..
