The Rolex Day-Date has become an icon in the watch world. When the first Day-Date was presented in 1956, it was a huge technical feat, as it was presented as the world’s first wristwatch to display both the day and the date.

Inventing such a movement that would support these functions is not an easy achievement, but Rolex succeeded. Since then, Rolex has, like with most of its movements, improved, refined, and upgraded the movement for improved function and durability.

In this article, we are going to focus on one of the movements that Rolex has used for the Day-Date model. More specifically the Day-Date 36mm.

Rolex caliber 3155

The Rolex caliber 3155 was introduced in 1988. This movement is, as you would expect, developed and manufactured entirely by Rolex. It features a perpetual rotor and most importantly features a day and a date function. Additionally, it displays hours, minutes, and seconds. Like all of Rolex’s perpetual movements, it is COSC certified. The requirement for a COSC certification is an accuracy of 4/+6 seconds a day, but this is something that Rolex does not think is good enough, and thus it has an accuracy of -2/+2 seconds per day instead.

For fitting inside a 36mm case, it is made slim and smaller than many others of the brand’s calibers. It has a height of 6mm and a diameter of 28.5mm. This movement beats at 28800 BPH – Rolex’s standard rate and has a power reserve of 48 hours.

The Caliber 3155 is the successor of the caliber 3055. The movement has a quickset date function and introduces a major improvement from the 3055, which is the ability to adjust the day instantaneously. This was a technical feature that the caliber 3055 did not have, but it improves the ease of use of the movement substantially. The introduction of the quickset function also meant going from 27 to 31 jewels. The predecessor was already well-regarded as an accurate and reliable movement, but the 3155 takes things further and improves it even more. Both in terms of functions and usability, but also reliability and durability.

 It features a paramagnetic Parachrom bleu hairspring for improved resistance to magnetic fields. Furthermore, it also has a free-sprung Nivarox hairspring and Breguet overcoil, with a Microstella-regulated Glucydur balance wheel.
